Norway’s Progress Party wants to curtail Krekar’s freedom!

Posted by African Press International on November 28, 2006

A Norwegain court has ruled that Mulla Krekar is a threat the Norwegian state security. The Progress right wing party, (Fremskrittsparti) would like to have him under house arrest after the court verdict.

The party says it will now take the matter in parliament with a possibility of making a law that will give the give the Norwegian authorities to put Krekar in house arrest until he can be deported or he leaves the country on his own.

The party leader Siv Jensen is of the opinion that Krekar must be locked up. She told TV 2 that Norway cannot continue to be a free place where people who have committed serious human rights violations.

In support of the progress party’s call for a new law directed against Krekar, the right wing party leader, Erna Solberg says there is reason to take up the issue in parliament.

Adding that Norway must find a way to deal with people who are a security risk and yet Norway is unable to return them to their countries of origin.

Krekar’s advocate, Arvid Sjødin, says the call for a law because of Krekar’s case is a populistic one “just a political game” by the party to win voters.

Thinking health in Africa!

Posted by African Press International on November 28, 2006

IPS has reported that “the 11th conference of the International Society for Telemedicine and ehealth (ISfTeH) kicked off Monday at the International Convention Centre in Cape Town, South Africa, where delegates from from around the globe gathered to discuss the benefits and challenges that eHealth (electronic health) offers to both the developed and developing world.”

This was the first annual event to be done in Africa and, “in the words of the society’s president, Michael Nerlich, “The event should allow for increasing recognition of telemedicine and eHealth in developing countries, particularly those in Africa.”

According to the reports, “telemedicine is the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) such as mobile phone text messages, e-mail and video conferencing to give rural primary health care workers access to specialists in urban academic hospitals.”

This may prove cost-effective than traditional methods. “Video conferencing in France, for example, is saving the national health care system substantial amounts of money in transportation costs through a programme called ALTERMED, which operates with the participation of more than 20 societies and associations. André Petitet of TAMTélésanté — a telemedicine company based in Aix en Provence in southern France — says that ALTERMED offers doctors the option of administering treatment locally instead of having unnecessary travel costs incurred through evacuating patients to better equipped, but distant, medical institutions. This is done through the exchange of medical advice via video conferencing, which “lets data travel rather than patients and health professionals,” notes Petitet.

Posted by African Press International on November 28, 2006

Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, right, meets with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani There will be no peace in Iraq, before the US pulls out their soldiers from the country.

The US must now understand that their continued stay in Iraq causes instability in the Middle East, Ayatollah Khamenei said while in a meeting with the Iraqi president Mr Talabani.

“President Jalal Talabani is in Tehran to try to secure Iran’s help in curbing the escalating violence in Iraq. The US is also interested in involving Iran, but it is unclear at what price.”

While on, ”his way to a Nato summit in Latvia, President Bush said in order for the US to open a dialogue with Iran, the Iranians would have to “verifiably suspend” its nuclear fuel enrichment programme, which could be used in weapons production.”

George W. Bush

Bush does not like that Iran has now emerged as a growing powerbroker in Iraq.

“On Monday, Mr Talabani held talks with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who said Iran was ready to do whatever it could.  Mr Ahmadinejad also stressed Iran is also concerned about mounting instability next door that a secure, progressive and powerful Iraq was in the interests of Iran and the whole region;” according to to BBC report.

Posted by African Press International on November 28, 2006

Robin Williams makes mockery of President Bush

Posted by African Press International on November 28, 2006

Robin Williams has made mockery of the US president George Bush accusing him of being unknowledgeable on Global warming.

Williams is saddened by the fact that Bush has not signed the Kyoto-agreement.

Williams was attending a premiere film «Happy Feet» in London on Sunday when he took the opportunity to castigate Bush, saying when the president hears of the dangers on global warming he thinks it is simply to hold one self indoors for a while and everything will be fine.

Kenya’s “Total Man” now official Kanu boss!

Posted by African Press International on November 28, 2006

It is now official! “KENYA’S TOTAL MAN” Mr Biwott is now Kanu boss. Uhuru Kenyatta, the son of the late father of the nation Mzee Jomo Kenyatta has been dethroned:

According to Kenya media, “the Government has registered Nicholas Biwott as the new chairman of the opposition party Kanu. The move effectively makes the Keiyo South MP the new Leader of the Official Opposition in Parliament.”

Mr William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta thought they knew better. They abused the father of the Nation, Moi who taught them politics.

It is like bringing up children and when they are able to put on their own underwears, they start abusing their father or mother because they think the  mother and father are too old to be in charge any more.

Now Moi has turned the tables and taught the young turks a lesson. He met with President Kibaki last week and within a short time, he orchestrated a successful bloodless coup in Kanu in favour of Biwott.

“The influential position has been held by Mr Uhuru Kenyatta since the 2002 general elections in his capacity as Kanu chairman. Mr Kenyatta fell out of grace with former President Moi after he led Kanu national officials in joining with the Liberal Democratic Party to form ODM.”

Raila Odinga had strategised the move to have Kanu join ODM-K, against Moi’s wishes. Raila had his own plans to use Uhuru and Ruto to achieve power that his father never managed to get. Raila has said  he helped Kibaki and Moi. His thinking was to revenge by using a Kikuyu – Mr Uhuru Kenyatta, to get paid for the help he claims to have given the Kikuyus to rule through Kibaki Tosha sloganism, and to use Ruto to get paid for the help he claims to have given to the Kalenjins through Moi when he recently publicised that the Kikuyus were planning to confiscate Moi’s property.

Ruto and Uhuru forgot that Moi has been on the helm in Kenya politics for a very long time. Professor of politics, as they call him, Moi has made a come back in Kenya politics.

The media reports that, ”19 other officials elected when the Biwott faction of Kanu held their national delegates conference in Mombasa on Friday. Members of the Biwott faction gave reporters a copy of a letter signed by the registrar of societies, Mrs Bernice W. Gachegu confirming the registration. Other key officials are Noah Katana Ngala (deputy chairman), Prof Sam Ongeri and Joash Wamang’oli (vice chairmen), Dr Josephine Ojiambo (secretary general) and Mohammed Sheikh Aden (treasurer) among others.”

Yesterday, Kenyatta group of Kanu held a national delegates conference in Kasarani stadium attended by 4,000 delegates who approved to join Raila’s ODM-K. The delegates chose to harass former president Moi by publicly telling him off and calling upon him to stop interfering with Kanu affairs.

New Kanu line-up:

National Chairman -Nicholas Biwott

Deputy chairman-Noah Katana Ngala

Vice chairman-Prof Sam Ongeri

Vice chairman-Joash Wamangoli

Secretary General-Dr Josephine Ojiambo

Assistant Secretary General-Timothy Mwambia

Choosing drugs to quick-rich herself gives life sentence!

Posted by African Press International on November 28, 2006

It has been reported that a Kenyan student who chose to get rich quickly is now to serve a life sentence in China.

The girl was arrested for drug trafficking. “She is Ms Oliviah Singaniabe Munoko, 26, who has now been convicted on her own guilty plea for trying to sneak 1.896 kg of heroin from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to China.”

Putting her in jail for life should serve to educate other students who give priority to getting rich than do the right thing – to study.

This is tragic for the family. For her, we think she should get a lesson out of this. Kenya should not try and get her repatriated to serve in Kenya.

The girl was, “supposed to sit her final year examinations at the university, where she was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Coincidentally, Malaysia is the same country where two other Kenyan students, Ms Deborah Donde and Ms Maureen Gathoni, are in custody as authorities investigate them and some friends for trafficking in marijuana.”

Although tragic sentence for life, the family should thank God for having saved her from being hanged. “The Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Munoko on Monday. She had been in prison cells for nine months since her arrest on March 10. Foreign Affairs minister, Mr Raphael Tuju who spoke to The Standard on Munoko’s fate, described the sentence as lenient but tragic.”

We agree with the minister when he says the sentence was not harsh. We do not think it is the duty of the Kenya government to fight for students trafficking drugs using tax payers money. These students travel abroad to studies but want to get rich instead of studying. Some travel for studies through harambee funding and instead of appreciating the society that funded their education abroad, they seek for leisure and luxury.

The minister knows the sentence is lenient, “because under Chinese law, drug traffickers are supposed to be summarily executed and tragic because Munoko’s life will go to waste after spending 15 years in school, three of them at University of Nairobi. Munoko’s journey to prison started on March 10 when she was arrested at Guangzhou Bai Yun International Airport carrying the drugs in a bag. “

According to the minister, “Munoko confessed that she committed the offence intentionally to make money to settle her family’s financial problems. The minister said the two students being held in Malaysia will appear in court on Friday. Drug traffickers in Malaysia face either death or life imprisonment when convicted. So far, Malaysia has executed 100 culprits, a third of them foreigners since 1981 when the anti-drugs laws were enacted.”

Drugs seems to occupy many people who want to get rich by short-cutting their way to luxury. In Kenya, “a Kenyan woman was arrested with cocaine worth Sh8 million. The suspect was arrested on Sunday morning at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on arrival from Dakar, Senegal. Her documents showed she had travelled to Johannesburg, Sao Paulo, Cape Verde, and Dakar.”
