ODM-Kenya drops earlier styled demand for minimum reforms, as Raila softens his stand

Posted by African Press International on February 3, 2007

Politics is a very interesting game. When people choose to be tough and demand things in a tough manner, threatening mass-demonstrations, the same people may end up being the victims of their own tactics.

And when some people see that they are not getting anywhere with the demands they may decide to soften up. This is the case now with ODM-Kenya on a face saving strategy.

They threatened mass actions to get reforms quickly. They have got anything done and now they want to safe face by softening up and asking President Kibaki to call for a dialogue. The president should not call any dialogue now. If need be, for one, then let the minister charged with the constitution do the job. If the president calls and chairs any meeting now, he will be seen as a coward man giving into ODM-K tactics and uncalled-for pressure. The voters should understand such tactics.

The Standard now reports that, “despite its earlier hardline stand on minimum constitutional reforms, ODM-Kenya appears to soften. Lang’ata MP, Mr Raila Odinga said on Friday that the party is ready to take part in what he termed – a structured dialogue to have the desired constitutional changes ahead of the General Election.”

The big question now is, why the softening move? Is ODM-K seeing that they may loose the battle to get the reforms, thus would like the international community to blame Kibaki of not calling a meeting now? Kibaki advisers must see this point.

Raila’s latest demand is for president Kibaki to be the one convening the meeting. He says he has no trust in Justice Minister  Martha Karua’s initiatives on the required reforms. Surely, the president has a right to deligate things. Why should the president be forced to do things that he can do through his ministers. What Karua does, she does it on behalf of the president and she deserves the respect of ODM-K people when she is doing her job.

It is possible that ODM-K luminaries and presidential hopefuls look at themselves to be much more important than a cabinet minister and thus, the need and demand to deal directly with with the president on matters of reforms.

The other presidential hopeful now visiting the US, “separately, in an exclusive interview with The Saturday Standard in Washington DC, Mwingi North MP, Mr Kalonzo Musyoka said that ODM-Kenya would not go into an election with laws that clearly favoured the incumbent President. He said minimum reforms demanded by the Kabete MP, Paul Muite’s parliamentary committee were critical ahead of the General Election. Kalonzo said his party would use all possible means, including mass action, to force the Government to enact the changes meant to level the playing field ahead of the elections.”

Mr Kalonzo is quoted saying, “We consider the ten-point changes recommended by the Muite committee essential to the development of democracy. If mass action is the language that will make the present Government listen to its citizens so be it.” adding that “it was the responsibility of everyone to make sure that the Government does not take the country back to the dark days of dictatorship, Kalonzo said President Kibaki had gone against the good faith and principles of IPPG.”

But for Raila it is important for his supporters to know that he is not giving in to anything. “Raila also warned that the olive branch should not be misconstrued to mean that ODM had abandoned the option for mass action to press for minimum reforms. “It is not the desire of ODM to subject Kenyans to a confrontational course with the Government. If we can have a structured dialogue the better”, adding that, “the Government side must be ready to debate key issues ODM wants addressed as part of the reforms before General Election.”

He wants to talk while on equal balance saying, “If the Government can agree to have the 10 key points put on the round table, then we can talk as equal partners ready to chart the way forward for a democratic Kenya.”

Raila is not happy with the president. “I feel offended when Kibaki goes bragging of the economic achievements of his administration. All that Kibaki is doing is to implement what we left when we were sacked. It is us who deserve the credit. The roads you are seeing being done were my initiative while the electricity in the rural areas was a sealed deal during Mr Ochilo Ayacko’s tenure as Energy minister.”

Accusing Kibaki that he is a liar, “He termed as unfortunate remarks by the Kibaki that he never pledged to run for a single term, adding, “It is against African culture for an elder of President Kibaki’s stature to go to a public platform and tell lies.”

Raila likes to play down things when he notices heat. He played, “down reports of a major rift over the role of his party, LPD, in ODM. He denied claims that the LDP had been sidelined in the running of ODM affairs with members from Kanu dominating top positions”, saying, “The interim officials we have are not representing parties but regions that they come from. We agreed as a matter of principle to suspend individual party interests and focus on ODM as a team.”

Raila, who wants to be president, “spoke during the burial of Mama Rebecca Nyachieo at Matutu settlement scheme in Nyamira District. The late Mrs Nyachieo was the mother-in-law to former Cabinet minister, Dr Chris Obure, a key member of ODM.”

Standard reports that, “Kalonzo, who is in the US for a series of high level meetings with a cross section of the US leadership and the Kenyans Diaspora added that President Kibaki’s recent unilateral appointment of electoral commissioners was a clear indication that the Government was laying ground to rig the forthcoming elections. Kalonzo spoke after attending the National Prayer Breakfast Meeting at the White House hosted by US President George Bush. He added that the independence of the electoral commission must be guaranteed before the elections.

Attending a prayer meeting in the White House is a boost for Kalonzo internationally. He has been quoted saying, “we are demanding the independence of the electoral commission, an affirmative action that will reserve 24 of the 36 seats of those nominated to Parliament for women and dual citizenship for Kenyans in Diaspora be entrenched into the constitution before we go into polls.”

During the White House morning prayer, “The Minister for Public Service, Mr Moses Akaranga, the Kenyan Ambassador to the US, Mr Peter Ogego and the Kenyan Ambassador to the UN, Mr Muita Muburu represented the Government”, of Kenya.

Nobody knows if Kalonzo was there on a private capacity or whether he was in the breakfast prayers representing LDP or ODM-Kenya.

Increased understanding and dialogue between religions and communities

Posted by African Press International on February 3, 2007

_____________________________

*”For a number of years Norway has promoted dialogue between ethnic and religious groups. Intercultural and interreligious dialogue is one of several means of promoting tolerance between ethnic and religious groups in a number of countries where terrorism is rife.

The reactions to the Muhammad cartoons showed how important cultural understanding and dialogue are to prevent conflicts based on religious divisions.

Norway will continue its intercultural and interreligious dialogue as a key foreign policy tool and an element in Norway’s efforts to prevent international terrorism.

In these efforts, the Norwegian authorities will maintain close contact with organisations and institutions that promote dialogue and tolerance on a daily basis.

Norway has – also played a part in ensuring that intercultural and interreligious dialogue figure prominently in the Council of Europe’s action plan of May 2005.

Norway - will continue these efforts by seeking to ensure that the measures set out in the plan are followed up – including those related to the school system and exchanges, and to cooperation and dialogue with religious organisations.

Norway also supports the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) efforts to combat international terrorism.

Universal access to education is a crucial element here. Another aspect is how education can help to overcome ethnic and religious differences.”*

Norway’s efforts in the fight against international terrorism

Posted by African Press International on February 3, 2007

_______________________

*”This strategy sets out the overall goals underlying Norway’s efforts in the fight against international terrorism and Norway’s main priorities and positions as regards the ongoing international efforts in this area.

It applies to Norway’s contributions to international efforts to both prevent and combat international terrorism.

All in all, Norway is making a substantial contribution to the fight against international terrorism. “They” – are involved along a number of different tracks.

However, the strategy reveals several areas where Norway’s efforts should be more focused:

  • Norway – must increase “their” ability and opportunities to play a proactive role in areas of the fight against international terrorism that we consider particularly important.
  • Norway - must increase “their” ability to rapidly adapt and coordinate measures in consultation with the UN, NATO, the OSCE and other forums of international cooperation.
  • Norway - must view “their” international efforts in the light of “their” domestic efforts and national experience and priorities where this is appropriate.

In order to improve coordination, Norway – is set to have – a special representative for terrorism charged with the overall coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ efforts to combat international terrorism. The special representative will represent Norway in relevant forums and will discuss relevant issues with like-minded countries and other cooperation partners. The special representative will also cooperate closely with Norwegian foreign service missions to ensure that Norway’s efforts in this area are coherent and closely coordinated.

Furthermore, - Norway – will seek to strengthen the contact and information exchange between the ministries and agencies that deal most closely with issues related to “their” efforts to combat international terrorism.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take the initiative to establish a project group made up of representatives of Norwegian NGOs and research institutions that will examine how Norway can best strengthen and further develop its efforts against international terrorism. As underlined by this strategy, Norway gives particular priority to long-term efforts to prevent international terrorism. This will be reflected in the work of the project group.

Furthermore, Norway undertakes to continue its assistance to individual countries in the fight against terrorism by developing our bilateral cooperation programmes. Priority will be given to countries with which cooperation has already been established.”*

Ignorance is bliss to super model Gisele

Posted by African Press International on February 3, 2007

2007_01_19t132453_450×296_us_brazil_models_gisele.jpgSuperModel Gisele Bundchen let her ignorance shine earlier this week when she posed as a spokesperson for anorexia.

Weak families apparently are causing girls to become anorexic, spouted this Victoria’s Secret genius I never suffered from this problem (anorexia) because I had a very strong family base. Parents are responsible, not the fashion industry.

As my high school teacher Mr. Bandettini once told me Be careful of those who basetheir world view, on their own personal experience.

The National Eating Disorders Association was quick to respond to Bundchens arrogant remarks, and dispelled her inaccurate claims in order to send a clear message- families are NOT responsible for eating disorders.

For the record, anorexia is classified as a brain disorder. In a landmark announcement October 2006, Thomas R. Insel, M.D, Director of The National Institute of Mental Heath states While symptoms are behavioral, this illness has a biological core, with genetic components, changes in brain activity, and neural pathways currently under study.

Note to Gisele: Please stickto walking silently down the runway, and keepyour mouth closed until you do your homework. Your comments are a slap in the face to the millions of girls suffering with eating disorders, not to mention your native country of Brazil, still in morning over the loss of these two young, precious lives.

r955233776.jpgana_reston.jpgBrazilian Ana Carolina Reston, and Carla Sabrado Caselle, both died of anorexia last fall.

Ana, 21, was amodel who sucumbed to kidney malfunction.

Carla, 22, a fashion student, suffered a heart attack.

Gisele, your lack of compassion and self serving comments are beyond me.You should be ashamed of yourself.

I have to thank Stephanie, from BackinSkinnyJeansfor informing me of this story (check out her YouTube Debut!). I have been fired up about itever since. We discuss this story in more depth our Chasing Beauty podcast, episode #4.

If Tyra’s a porkchop, what am I?

Posted by African Press International on February 3, 2007

____________________

tyra33_banks.jpgBy now you have all heard about the Tyra Bank’s saga, and heard her response in People magazine “I still feel hot.”

I am usually about a week late to post to these type of stories, since I like to contemplate before I post.

Those of you who know me well may recall that Tyra was the impetus for this blog, so I find this to be an ironic twist. Her completely asinine show America’s Top Model got me completely bent out of shape due to it’s lack of realism and responsibility.

On the topic of Tyra being a porkchop, the comment was rude and mean, but totally predictable. The weekly magazine stands are separated into two distinct sections – who is fat, who is skinny.

It’s a pattern that has been around as long as I can remember, and it will continue as long as magazines are sold, and people find enjoyment out of the pain of another fellow human being.

On the porkchop comment, if this babe is a porkchop, we are all in big trouble. She is a heck of a beauty at 5′10, 161. You can bet women all over the country are now comparing their height and weight to Tyra’s, sadly, it’s only natural.

tyra_180.jpgSo what’s next for Tyra? I predict she will rapidly lose some pounds.

I know she is stating to the press she is happy, and she wants to be a solid role model, yada, yada, yaha.

But the reality is, not many of us could be totally blasted in the national press, shown in a swimsuit with cellulite, and not totally freak out about our weight. Could you handle it?

Not I.

Questions being raised about the activities of ODM-Scandinavia chapter

Posted by African Press International on February 3, 2007

______________________

Well, ODM Scandinavia likewise in other parts of the world have been organising fundraising and it has become a big time business scum to help fund the ODM Kenya fundraising and national elections.

For the sake of accountability, does ODM Scandinavia know ODM Kenya secretariat contacts?

Sincerely

Cheaters Springes.

___________________________________

The above e-mail has been received by APN and we think the question being raised is relevant, making us to publish the contents.

It will serve a good purpose now that we are aware ODM Scandinavia has said it is against corruption in Kenya and is working to remove Kibaki’s government in this year’s elections.

Transparency is the key here and we hope ODM Scandinavia can give a brief to the readers on the subject raised.
