Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) The « Congrès pour la Démocratie et le Progrès (CDP, ruling party) failed to get the majority of votes in Ouagadougou, the capital city (4 out of 9 seats), based on the provisional results of the legislative elections.
However, CDP is expected to win about 74 seats out of 111 in the National Assembly, after winning the majority of votes in other major cities, including Bobo-Dioulasso (3 out 5 seats), Koudougou and Ouahigouya (3 out of 4).
Ranking second is opposition party, but member of the government, the “Alliance pour la Démocratie et la Fédération/Rassemblement démocratique Africain (ADF/RDA) with about 12 MPs.
All in all, 13 political parties out of 47 in competition are expected to be represented at the National Assembly, including the “Union pour la Renaissance/movement sankariste (UNIR/MS) of Benewinde Sankara and Partie de la Renaissance Nationale (PAREN) of Pr. Laurent Bado.
Observers of the African Union and the Inter-parliamentary Commission of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (CIP-UEMOA) agreed that the “May 6th 2007 polls were free and transparent.
The final results of the polls are billed to be published next May 12.
