Yaounde to host Central African region security conference

Dakar (Senegal) The United Nation standing consultative committee on security in the central African region is billed to hold its sixth ministerial meeting from 3 to 7 September 2007 in Yaounde, the Cameroonian capital, a release copied to APA said. The meeting will examine the recent geopolitical and security developments in the concerned member states, as well as projects for disarmament and security in Central Africa. This especially focuses on the Sao Tome initiative to develop a legal instrument to control small and light arms, as well as institute a code of conduct for armed and security forces in Central Africa region. The major aim of the Committee, which is chaired by Sao Tome and Principe, is to promote peace and security in central Africa through measures to strengthen trust, notably the disarmament and the reduction of arms. The committee comprises Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Central African Republic, DR Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, and Chad. The structure meets twice a year at ministerial level and holds special conferences, seminars and workshops on peace and security issues in Central Africa. Ministers and government experts, representatives of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEMAC), UN missions in the region and the regional centre for small and light arms will take part in the ministerial meeting Other participants will include the International Organisation of the Francophonie and the permanent secretariat of the International Conference on the Great Lakes and Central region for human rights and democracy.
