President warns perpetrators of violence, calls for dialogue
President Mwai Kibaki has assured wananchi that the Government is doing everything possible to ensure the security of all Kenyans and warned those who continue to violate the law that they will face its full force.
Saying he was deeply disturbed by the senseless violence instigated by some leaders in pursuit of their personal political agendas, President Kibaki urged the public to remain calm as the Government continues with its efforts to restore law and order.
“Kenya cannot be threaten by anyone and we will not allow those breaking the law to continue,” President Kibaki said.
The Head of State was speaking today at State House Nairobi where he said he was ready to have dialogue with concerned parties once the nation is calm and the political temperatures are lowered enough for constructive and productive engagement.
He condemned the unnecessary loss of lives, destruction of property and displacement of innocent wananchi from their homes, especially women and children.
“I will soon be visiting the affected areas to join fellow Kenyans in the healing and reconciliation process,” President Kibaki said.
President Kibaki reiterated his commitment and duty to protect the lives and property of all Kenyans and to ensure that the country is governed by the rule of law that applies to all irrespective of their status.
Noting that in the last few days he has continuously appealed for peace and restraint, the President thanked those who have heeded his call, especially those who have taken the initiative to bring about peace and reconciliation in the country.
President Kibaki said the elections were free and fair and asked those who were dissatisfied by the results to seek redress from the law courts.
“We held elections which were free and fair and anyone who is dissatisfied has a right to seek redress from the law courts but killing innocent women and children is not the right way to go,” the Head of State said.
The President, once again, appealed to all young people to reject any attempts by politicians to use them to harm their fellow Kenyans, saying this is their country and harming their fellow citizens and willfully destroying property is destroying their own future.
He reiterated his personal commitment to lead the nation in healing and reconciliation, saying his office was open to all Kenyans of goodwill whose desire is to have a united, peaceful, and stable Kenya.
The President reminded all leaders that they have an obligation to respect and uphold the country’s constitution and its laws.
He said the leaders also have an obligation to uphold and protect the rights of every Kenyan to live, work and own property anywhere in the country, adding that it is their duty to ensure that these rights are protected and upheld throughout the nation.
“As we seek avenues of bringing back peace and calm to this country, I am appealing to you to demonstrate your respect for this country and its institutions by restraining yourselves and your supporters from engaging in unlawful activities,” President Kibaki said.
President Kibaki stressed that no one has a right to deny Kenyans the right to live or own property in any part of the country, adding that the Government will remain firm in ensuring all Kenyans are protected.
The Head of State directed the Police Commissioner to increase the number of police hotlines for wananchi to report any suspicious activities that may lead to acts of lawlessness.
He also directed the country’s security services to be vigilant and deal firmly with all perpetrators of criminal activities, saying the Government is providing food and other humanitarian requirements to all those displaced by the violence.
“The military has been entrusted with the execution of this important responsibility. I convey my deepest condolences and sympathies to the relatives of all the innocent persons who have lost their lives,” President Kibaki said.
The President urged all Kenyans to work together as brothers and sisters in seeking lasting peace and unity for the country.
