Wood, Kiai reiterate call for no amnesty
Outgoing British High Commissioner Adam Woods has expressed concern over what he termed as a continued culture of impunity in the country.
In particular reference to calls for blanket amnesty to perpetrators of the post election violence, Wood said it is unfortunate that the law appears to be applied selectively and only targets the poor.
Speaking at the Kenya National Commission on Human rights headquarters on a bid farewell to the civil society members after a 3 year stint in the country as British envoy, Wood took the opportunity to offer an assessment of the country’s handling of justice matters.
Wood is particularly dismayed by the culture of impunity and the selective application of law in criminal cases.
His host, Chairman of the Human rights commission Maina Kiai reiterated that no amnesty should be granted to suspects of the post election violence and called for prosecution of both the actual perpetrators of violence and their financiers.
Wood said the International community is closely watching the grand coalition government to ensure it delivers on the reform agenda.
Kiai also revealed he will be quitting the Commission as Chairman at the expiry of his term by the end of July.
