Raila has narrow lead over Martha Karua – poll (Interesting results: When Karua takes her campaigns to all regions she might defeat Raila.)

Prime Minister Raila Odinga would be elected president if elections were called today, a Steadman poll shows.

However, Kenyans’ support for the Coalition Government has waned. Only 33 per cent approve the power sharing deal, down from 61 per cent in December, last year. More than half of voters ““ 53 per cent “ want fresh elections. In fact, 74 of those interviewed predicted snap polls. About 43 per cent wish elections could wait until 2012, say the findings by Steadman Group (now Synovate).

Raila’s closest competitor is former Cabinet Minister Martha Karua followed by Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka.

Raila leads at 19 per cent with Karua closely chasing at 16 per cent and Kalonzo 14 per cent.

However, 33 per cent of Kenyans prefer new candidates.

If President Kibaki would run, shows the survey, six per cent of Kenyans would vote for him with Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta closely following at four per cent and Agriculture Minister William Ruto, three per cent.

Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi and Internal Security Minister, George Saitoti are the least popular candidates, with each one per cent support.

These results would however change if all candidates declared their intention to run for presidency as Karua has.

Raila, Saitoti, Mudavadi, Ruto and Uhuru are yet to declare their presidential ambitions and President Kibaki would constitutionally be out of the race come 2012.

On performance, President Kibaki was rated poorly, with 48 per cent saying he has failed. About 38 per cent felt Kalonzo has not performed. Raila is the least disapproved at 36 per cent.

The media remains the most trusted institution with 73 per cent of respondents giving it the thumbs- up.

Parliament has slipped in ratings with only three per cent of Kenyans expressing confidence in the august House.

Different scenario

Releasing the results yesterday, Steadman lead researcher, Dr Tom Wolf, said Kenyans have also expressed displeasure in the manner in which the Government is handling poverty, food pricing, corruption, unemployment and crime.

On the presidential race, said the survey, the scenario would change as more candidates aggressively declare their interests and Karua would be reaping from her resignation and being the loudest in declaring her presidential ambitions.

She is Narc-Kenya’s chairperson and is likely to cause a storm especially in Central Province, which is also considered a stronghold for Uhuru, Kalonzo and Saitoti.

Things may also take a new turn depending on how the considered candidates interrelate in the run up to 2012 hence it would be immature to celebrate now.

For Karua though, the results would serve as an impetus for her since she is now a notch higher than most of her competitors. However it may also work against her since the Gichugu MPs’ enemies would work around the clock to halt her growing popularity.

Parties lose appeal

The main objective of this survey was to assess the general public opinion on Government performance, public trust in various public institutions and personalities.

Other issues include performance of the various public personalities, evaluation of the power sharing agreement and Kenyans’ political alignment.

Majority of Kenyans no longer have a party of choice but ODM leads in popularity at 31 per cent followed by PNU at 11 per cent, Narc-Kenya, ten per cent, ODM-Kenya, eight per cent and Kanu, two per cent. All the other parties share in the remaining three per cent.

The poll was conducted between Monday and Friday last week involving 2035 respondents aged 18 and above countrywide.

Dubbed the Social, Political, Economic and Cultural Barometer, the survey is conducted every three months.

Christians lose the battle for Sarah Obama’s soul – She will remain Muslim! It is now clear President Obama is a Muslim, now revealed!

Posted by African Press International on April 19, 2009

Why is the Kenya government using tax payers money to give security detail to Obama’s village grandmother who lives in Kogello in Kenya? Is there fear she may be kidnapped and used for ransom? Is her life really in any danger?

She has now proclaimed she will remain Muslim. Will Mr Obam also come out of the closet and admit his real religion? Or he will continue to keep American people in the dark? (API)

In Summary

  • Her family blocks the SDA’s attempts to baptise her

Attempts to convert US President Barack Obama’s grand mother to Christianity flopped on Saturday at the 11th hour after family members opposed the move.

Although Mama Sarah Obama had dressed up for the day, her son, Saidi Obama, and other family members were adamant that she would not attend a baptism ceremony organised by the Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA).

Changed her mind

Mr Saidi said that they were opposed to the move to take Mama Sarah to church since she is a Muslim.

I was opposed to it because I believe she was not fully informed about what they were going to do to her. I personally asked her not to attend the function, he said.

On Saturday, SDA Pastor Tom Obuya arrived at Mama Sarah’s Nyang’oma Kogello home to take her to the Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground where the ceremony was to take place. However, he found she had changed her mind on instructions from Mr Saidi.

Pastor Obuya said that the church had been reaching out to Mama Sarah for the past three weeks.

Mama Sarah had assured us that she was converting, and we were ready to baptise her today, but it seems the family has prevailed upon her, said Pastor Obuya.

The security detail at her home confirmed that there had been arrangements for Mama Sarah to travel the 100 kilometres to Kisumu, but said that apart from the fact that they were to escort her, they did not know much else about the visit.

Any value

I did not understand why they were asking her to attend a Christian ceremony, yet she is a Muslim. I thought her presence in the church would not add any value, Mr Saidi said.

Family sources told the Sunday Nation that Mama Sarah had prepared for the ceremony and among those who were to accompany her were sisters-in-law Norah Otieno and Consolata Oguna.

Also, the 30 members of the Nyang’oma Seventh Day Adventist Church had hired a vehicle to take them to Kisumu so they could welcome Mama Sarah to their congregation.

Her baptism was to mark the end of a three-week convention by the church in Kisumu.

Mr Saidi said that apart from the faith aspect, Mama Sarah had knee complications that would make travelling such a long distance uncomfortable.

She would also have attracted unnecessary attention which is not good for her, he said.

Obama may come to Kenya soon to see Raila. Will he also jumbojet to his father’s village – Kogelo in Nyanza Province?

Posted by African Press International on April 19, 2009

Obama, if he visits Kenya, is expected to travel to his father’s village. The question is whether he will jumbo-jet to his father’s village, of which it will be a jubilation for the villagers there to see the return of their half Luo son.
Jubilation will be expected in that part of Kenya and not the whole country because in Kenya things go by tribal pride and not national pride. One would not expect Kikuyus, Kalenjins or Kamba and many other Kenyan tribes (42 in all) to run mad in jubilation for that matter because Obama’s father is not from that tribe. Some people seem to think however that the whole Kenya nation is high sky jubilation-wise due to Obama’s climb as US President. This is not the case at all. He is from one tribe, and that is it! Kenya politics is not easy to change. Many saw it expressed after 2007 elections followed by election violence with many people dead due to strong deep rooted  tribal feelings. (API)

In Summary

  • Nairobi conference presents US President with chance to make his first trip to Africa

United States President Barack Obama could visit Kenya as early as August this year to attend the Eighth forum of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa).

The Sunday Nation has learnt that Mr Obama may use the Agoa conference to make his first trip to the African continent since he was elected US President.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs official said Mr Obama could also visit the country during the 9th Leon H. Sullivan Summit scheduled to be held in July 2010.

The summit is to be attended by an estimated 1,500 African-American businessmen.

In an interview with the Sunday Nation, Mr Thuita Mwangi, the Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary, said President Kibaki would invite President Obama to attend both conferences.

The Agoa conference is scheduled to take place from August 4-8 at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi. Kenya was handed chairmanship of the Agoa African consultative group of ministers last August.

Agoa is a United States Trade Act that significantly enhances access to US markets for 39 sub-Saharan African countries. The last conference was held in Washington in August last year.

The Leon H. Sullivan Summit meeting was initially scheduled to be held in Rwanda but has been moved to Nairobi as it coincided with other national activities in the tiny Eastern Africa country.

Mr Mwangi said Kenya had in principle agreed to host the conference from July 19-23.

The last meeting was held in Arusha, Tanzania, last year and was attended by former President George W. Bush.

The Sullivan Foundation enables the host country to get direct investment opportunities and establish links with businesses in the US and Europe.

Participants at the 2010 summit are expected to discuss investment opportunities in agriculture, tourism, energy, education, science and technology as well as infrastructure.

President Obama, whose father was Kenyan, was in Europe last month for the G20 conference. He was also in Mexico early last week.
