Refusing African people their rights – Sudan and European Ignorance

Posted by African Press International on September 12, 2009

A few years ago, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia and was supported by Javier Solana and the European Union. Then Montenegro had a referendum where people voted for independence and this was also fully supported by the EU.

But when Africans in South Sudan want to decide in what kind of a country they want to live in, then Solana and the Europeans have a problem.

They want to dismiss their legitimate right for self-determination just to keep the status quo in Africa and the world.

Norway provides emergency relief to famine victims in Africa

Posted by African Press International on September 12, 2009

The Horn of Africa has again been hit by famine and drought. Norway has allocated NOK 50 million in emergency relief to the people living in the region.

The allocation will be channelled through the UN, the Red Cross and other NGOs, and will be used to meet immediate needs.

Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre, commented: “It is vital to focus more closely on political solutions for this region. Horn of Africa receives 40% of all international food aid. We must intensify efforts to increase food security in this densely populated part of the world.”

A delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Director General Geir O. Pedersen, has assessed the humanitarian needs in the region.

Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim pointed out that emergency relief alone is not enough. “Kenya used to be able to sell food to its neighbours. Now these countries are dependent on food aid. This is a result of factors such as conflict, climate change and inefficient agricultural methods.”

Norway is one of the largest donors to the Horn of Africa, particularly in terms of emergency relief. This year we are providing aid amounting to NOK 200 million to Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia. In addition, Norway is the world’s fourth largest contributor to the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), which is also providing funding for the region.

Norway’s Foreign Minister denounces death sentences in Congo trial

Posted by African Press International on September 12, 2009

Two Norwegian citizens were condemned to death at the end of a trial in Kisangi, DR Congo, on Tuesday. The Minister of Foreign Affairs commented as follows on the verdict:

“The sentencing of the two Norwegian citizens to death is completely unacceptable. Norway is against the death penalty on principle, and I will contact the Congolese Foreign Minister to make our position clear.

“I will emphasise that legal safeguards must be maintained, and that we hold the Congolese authorities responsible for the safety of the two Norwegians. I will also request that Norway’s views are communicated to the appropriate authorities in Kisangani.

“Norway also repudiates the verdict of espionage for Norway and the decision that the Norwegian state must bear joint and several liability for damages. Norway is not a party in this case.

“Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will remain in Kisangani until further notice to assist the two Norwegian citizens in this difficult situation, and to assess what kind of help they will need in the time ahead.

“Norway’s Ambassador to DR Congo will meet the Congolese authorities in Kinshasha today to pass on this message. It will also be communicated to the DR Congo’s Embassy in Stockholm.”
