Monrovia (Liberia)-Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has joined women in Africa and across the world to celebrate the creation of the newest United Nations entity known as United Nations Women (UN Women).
“The new logo is similar yet different,” President Sirleaf observed, describing it as “one which conveys the message of equality for women worldwide”.
According to a presidential mansion press statement issued here late Tuesday, President Johnson Sirleaf said she was confident that with Madam Michelle Bachelet as head of the new body, “UN Women is in very capable hands”.
She welcomed the decision by the UN General Assembly to place women organizations under a single umbrella, noting that the “consolidation also brings together resources and mandates for greater impact”.
She described the decision as one that was long overdue, saying, “Although UN Women only became operational in January 1st, all indications are that it has hit the ground running, bringing greater coherence and coordination to the four entities that preceded it”.
The Liberian leader assured the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon of her government’s support in contributing to gender equality and empowerment and advancement of women worldwide, building on the milestones and the successes already achieved.
