KENYA: With the current expansion of Kisumu airport to meet international standards, once commissioned it will attract several business investments opportunities not only to Kisumu town but also the entire Western Kenyan region.
This expansion together with the advent of the new constitution which is focused on the devolve government will transform Kisumu town to a major business hub within the great lakes region. These anticipated lucrative business investment opportunities are highly likely to increase Kisumu town population threefold, currently stands at 800,000, with in the next five (5) or so years to come. In order to guard against the obvious bottlenecks such serious traffic jam currently being experienced in Nairobi town, it is imperative for the government to plan ahead on the way forward to handle proper infrastructure network in town well in advance which can accommodate the Population of approximately 3.5 million in the next ten or so years to come. To name other projects that are critical for the expansion of the airport and town are improvements of sewer system, supply of clean water, Hotel accommodation just to name but not a few.
The current method of supplying clean water to city residents by Dunga water treatment plant from Lake Victory is highly criticized by town residents due erratic break down of the plant. This sometimes leave town residents to go without water for some days. It is therefore our concern to advice the government to allocate adequate funds to acquire land in Nandi Hills and construct a dam with a bigger cubic capacity to supply clean water which can meet the demands of the current and anticipated bigger population of 3.5 million and plus in foreseeable future. This would be added advantage due downward gravity which will naturally propel water to Kisumu town and more so Nandi Hills is known to have continuous heavy rainfall throughout the year and as a result the dam will have enough water for Kisumu town which negates the worry shortage of water supply during dry spell.
For Hotel accommodations, relevant government organ should negotiate with world-class Hotels such as Calton Centre, Holiday In, formula one etc on the hotel investment opportunities with government lucrative incentives such allowable good capital allowances on investment on plants, tax-free benefits on expatriates as a means to attract investors to Kisumu town.
In this connection, the government should analyze, review and serious consider the above matters regarding modernization of Kisumu town to meet the required standards of the city, so that the lakeside town becomes the modern city within the great lakes region.
