ICC says Al Bashir has no immunity

Posted by African Press International on December 23, 2011

It is now clear after the ICC judges have decided that Al Bashir has no immunity from arrest and prosecution.

This is happening after the recent problems facing Kenya when the Kenyan court issued directives that Al Bashir could be arrested if he ever landed on Kenyan soil.

As we reported earlier, The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Kenya Dr Willy Mutunga is not happy with the government, saying the judiciary should be left alone to do its job as per the constitution. Now he receives affirmation from the ICC whose judges think the same.

The quarrel between the Judiciary and the government got hot after a High Court Judge issued an order to arrest the Sudanese President Mr Al Bashir should he ever step on Kenyan soil.

The president is wanted by the International Criminal Court to face serious charges on crimes against humanity in connection with Darfur killings.

After the order was issued by the High Court in Nairobi, as requested by the Kenya Chapter of the International Jurists, Sudan reacted by ordering the Kenyan ambassador to leave their country and at the same time recalling their own.

The Chief Justice is angered by the fact that the government has started a diplomatic campaign to have the arrest warrant withdrawn. He has told the politicians to desist from jumpy-jumpy mouthing with unnecessary comments against the arrest warrant.

The Foreign affairs minister Mr Moses Watengula was despatched by President Kibaki to Khartoum to cool down President Al Bashir’s temper, before he does more damage to Kenya by – “most probably”  - chasing all the Kenyans out of his country..

But at home in Kenya, the Chief Justice says, those who are not happy with the court’s decision may appeal, but do so following the law without any form of intimidation.

Nazi SS-Uniform causes dismissal: UK Premier David Cameron sacks MP

Posted by African Press International on December 23, 2011

A member of the Commons MP Aidan Burley, 32, has lost his job as a parliamentary private secretary to Justine Greening who is the Transport Secretary.

In the UK, a parliamentary secretary is chosen by the minister and given the duties to be the contact man with backbenchers. A good job done normally helps one towards a ministerial post.

A position of this kind makes the holder to be part of the government and they are expected to support government policies in parliamentary debates.

Burley, who represents Cannock Chase in central England is a member of the conservatives like the PM.

He has expressed regret but that has not saved him from the sack.

The episode took place while he was attending a British stag party, where one of his friends going to get married was celebrating to say bye-bye to bachelorhood. These are parties held when a man going to get married enjoys with friends and the dressing is normally embarrassing and everyone jovial

The PM discovered that Burley, while at the party, allowed himself to be photographed sitting next to the stag. The stag was dressed as an SS officer.

Miguna Miguna in the cold after loosing his job – Lawyer Mwangi takes over, PM Raila has decided

Posted by African Press International on December 23, 2011

Gone are the days when Miguna Miguna used to shout around using the name of the Prime Minister. When he was suspended, he chose not to talk things over with the PM and his associates. Instead, the vocal man chose to attack his boss publicly making it sound as if the PM depended on him for success. He even gave the PM an ultimatum to say sorry to him. The PM ignored him totally.

Now it is over for the former legal adviser to Raila Odinga. When he was suspended in August, he ran to the media to attack his boss. Thereafter he went to court to seek redress and the courts have now decided that he will not get the job back.

Miguna was accused of misconduct while working for the PM. He thought he was actually working for the government, but the High court now rules that he was a political nominee working on coalition matters and that he could lose his job any time depending on the way the government coalition managed her affairs.

According to Kenya media, the kicking out of Miguna by Raila was timely although unceremonious, but many do agree that he had exercised arrogance towards those he worked with during his time at the PM’s office.

When he was still in the job, the media quoted him many times castigating the PNU side of the coalition government. He even wrote a letter to the president raising issues about the way the coalition works, without consulting the PM – his boss. It is said he forgot who the boss was and instead usurped Raila’s powers and by so doing, misrepresented him in many forums, and that became his downfall in the end.

The new appointee, Lawyer Paul Mwangi will now be the PM’s legal adviser. He takes up his appointment on the 2nd of in January 2012.
